INDEPENDENCE DAY 2019

Lady Shri Ram College For Women celebrated India’s 73rd Independence Day on 14th August, 2019 with great fervour. The flag-hoisting ceremony was conducted by members of the National Cadet Corps’ LSR wing, in the presence of the principal, administrative staff and faculty. The new cadre of young recruits showcased their discipline through a marching segment. The investiture of the regiment followed soon after.

A cultural performance was organised for the student body in the Auditorium. A celebration of freedom ensued with various performing societies such as Saaz and the Indian Music Society taking to the stage. The LSR Dramatics Society performed a rendition of Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Mrinal Ki Chitthi’, a tale of a young woman who rebels just once in her life against the conservatism that binds her in order to finally rid herself of its fetters. The theme of freedom from unreasonable  social constraints reflects the ideal that leaders of the national movement wanted India to embody. The Elocution Society’s production brought India’s unsung heroes into the spotlight. Figures such as Dhyan Chand and Captain Lakshmi Sehgal were interviewed to commemorate their contribution to India’s rich heritage.

An exhibition focused on Mahatma Gandhi’s role in India’s freedom struggle was also set-up in the library foyer. A timeline describing the Freedom Movement’s most crucial events along with banners on Gandhi’s tenet of non-violence were made available for the students. A selection of books on India’s history, colonial past, and identity politics was displayed as well.
